  • PLM (Periodic Limb Movements)
  • Parvo Nocturnes (Night Terrors)
  • Somnambulism (Sleep Walking)
  • Somnilquey (Sleep Talking)

Monterey Bay Sleep Center offers several different types
of sleep testing:

Overnight Sleep Study Services
The technologist will familiarize you with the general layout of the sleep center, the location of your room, and briefly explain the procedures involved in conducting your sleep study. Although somewhat complex, this study is a painless procedure it, requires the technician to apply electrodes to your head and face using a thick conductive paste which can be washed off with warm water in the morning. Sensors will be placed on your neck, chest and legs. A cannula like a sensor will be attached under your nose. Some belts will be placed around your chest and abdomen, and an oximetry probe will be placed on one of your index fingers. Dependent upon the nature of the study ordered, additional sensors may be applied at this time during the study. Once the patient is ready to go to sleep, the study will gather comprehensive information, including sleep stages, respiration, body position, brain wave activity, eye movement, muscle movement, and electrical activity of the heart. The study is scored and then interpreted by our certified sleep specialist. The results are sent to your referring physician. The study is used to diagnose most sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, REM disorders as well as a host of other sleep disturbances.

Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)
These tests are designed to help us understand issues of daytime sleepiness and narcolepsy, and are essential for accurate diagnosis of specific sleep-related disorders. It measures how long it takes a person to fall asleep. The patient stays for the night and the next day. The patient will take 15-minute naps every two hours, beginning the morning after your nighttime sleep study. Between naps, you must stay awake. The technologist will document the amount of time it takes for you to fall asleep and your sleep patterns during the naps. Our sleep specialist will examine the results and make a diagnosis.

Maintenance Of Wakefulness Test (MWT)
This study measures the patient’s ability to stay awake during a time when they normally would not sleep. Patient stays for the night and the next day. The patient will stay awake without napping during the daytime. Our sleep specialist will examine the results and make a diagnosis.
